What is the Pain Caused by Endometriosis?

Wednesday, September 21st, 2022

Endometriosis is a condition that affects the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It is estimated that about 10% of women in the United States have endometriosis. The pain caused by this condition can be extremely intense and debilitating.

There are several causes of endometriosis pain, but the most common is said to be pelvic pain syndrome (PPS). PPS is a dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles that can cause chronic pelvic pain. Other causes of endometriosis pain include retrograde menstruation, adhesions, and inflammatory conditions of the pelvic tissue.

Endometriosis is a disorder that affects the uterus, caused by the growth of endometrial tissue in areas other than the uterus.

Symptoms can vary but can include pain during periods, infertility, and rectal bleeding. The cause is unknown but may be related to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Treatment includes surgery, medication, and sometimes radiation therapy.

While there is no cure for endometriosis, treatments can help relieve the pain. Many women find relief from medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen, physical therapy, acupuncture or massage.

Surgery may also be necessary to remove lesions or adhesions from the uterus. If you are experiencing intense endometriosis pain, it is important to speak with your doctor about options for treatment.
