How To Use Sandpaper Properly in NZ

Sunday, October 17th, 2021

What is sandpaper? How is it used? How do you use sandpaper properly? Sandpaper is used by professional contractors as well as home improvement DIYers to smoothen, shape, finish, and polish wood, drywall seams, and window panes.

Automotive sandpaper used to be made from actual grains of sand, which were then glued onto a backing paper. Nowadays, actual grains of sand have been omitted. It now contains garnet, silicon carbide, and aluminum oxide.

There are many types of sandpaper in NZ, or grades of sandpaper, that can be used for various jobs. The right type of sandpaper for your project will depend on the job you are doing. A smaller number of grades is more coarse and will remove more material each stroke.

You will first need to determine how much sanding you require for your project. You should choose a higher-grade (grit) paper if the object's surface has not become too rough. A 100-grit paper should be sufficient. You can use 50-60-grit heavier paper if the object is very hard or dented.

The actual sanding can be done by wrapping the paper around the block of sanding or by pressing the sandpaper against an object using your fingers. Simply move the paper over the object's surface by simply moving it back and forth. You can even search online for more information about sandpaper in NZ.
